Inspiration for Today: The Help

This is my book club read for this month. If you have not read it, buy it immediately. One of the best fiction books I’ve read in a really, really long time.

Excerpt from The Help by Kathryn Stockett:

(A white housewife in 1960’s Mississippi talking with her black maid)

Miss Celia stares down into the pot like she’s looking for her future. “Are you happy, Minny?”

“Why you ask me funny questions like that?”

“But are you?”

“Course I’s happy. You happy too. Big house, big yard, husband looking after you.” I frown at Miss Celia and I make sure she can see it. Because ain’t that white people for you, wondering if they are happy enough.”

  1. All of my book club loved it too. One member told the story of first living in the south and when she went to the laundry she thought the washer that said “whites only” meant that only that washer could be used if you were using bleach.
